The Ramadan restaurant reality
Ramadan 2026 runs from approximately 18 February to 19 March, with Eid al-Fitr on 20-21 March. Exact dates vary by country and moon sighting — Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman may differ by a day. Plan campaigns to launch when Saudi Arabia declares first fast; adjust the send calendar for other markets by one day if needed.
For restaurants, the month reshapes every daypart. Lunch traffic collapses to near zero. In its place: two intense demand peaks that dwarf normal service.
- Iftar rush — 6:15pm to 9pm local time. Sunset call to prayer triggers the largest single spike in restaurant demand of the year. Pre-iftar delivery orders concentrate between 5:00 and 6:00pm; dine-in seatings run 7:00-9:00pm; family group orders push averages 3-4× higher than a normal dinner.
- Suhoor push — 2:00am to 5:00am local time. Restaurants staying open for suhoor capture a distinct late-night audience: families driving out for dine-in, or ordering delivery for the pre-dawn meal. Karak, harees, ful medames, cheese manakish and light grills dominate.
- Family gatherings dominate. Ramadan iftar is a social meal. Party sizes swing from a normal average of 2.4 to 5.6 in Saudi Arabia and 4.8 in the UAE. Family bundles, group menus and larger tables become the core inventory.
A well-executed Ramadan is worth 35-50% revenue lift over the 30 days versus a normal month for casual-dining and family concepts. Buffet operators regularly hit 70%+ lift. Quick service, less family-oriented, still lifts 25-35%. WhatsApp is the highest-leverage channel to capture that lift because it's where GCC families organise the daily "where are we going for iftar" conversation.
Menu planning — the iftar mix
Every WhatsApp campaign message has to point to a menu that matches how people actually eat during Ramadan. Get the menu wrong and no template will save you.
The core iftar plate
Break the fast is traditionally started with dates and milk (or water), moving to soup (lentil, harira), a savoury round (samosa, luqaimat, spring roll), then a main. In the GCC that main is typically machboos, biryani, ouzi, mandi or grilled meat platters. South Asian restaurants lean heavily on biryani and karak — these two items alone can drive 40-55% of iftar revenue for Indian and Pakistani concepts.
Family combos are non-negotiable
Package the menu in 3-portion, 4-portion, 6-portion and 8-portion iftar bundles with a fixed price. Families ordering for iftar do not want to build a cart of 22 items — they want to pick a "family for six" bundle and be done. Restaurants that lead with bundles see 60-70% higher AOV than restaurants that keep a la carte only.
Delivery-heavy pre-iftar, walk-in dominant post-iftar
The 4:30-6:00pm window is the delivery-heavy period — families ordering food to arrive right before the call to prayer. Delivery cutoff at 5:30pm has to be honoured or the entire order is a customer-service failure. After iftar (7:30pm onwards) the balance flips: walk-ins for a longer, slower family meal.
The WhatsApp campaign framework — four campaign types
Don't send random offers. Structure the 30 days as four sequential campaigns, each with its own goal.
Campaign 1 — Teaser (2 weeks before Ramadan)
Goal: build anticipation, capture pre-orders for iftar reservations. Two sends. Template: "Ramadan Kareem from [restaurant] — our iftar menu drops in 10 days. Book your table now, priority to WhatsApp customers." Expected reply rate: 12-18%.
Campaign 2 — Iftar menu drop (1 week before)
Goal: convert teaser interest into confirmed bookings and pre-orders. Send the full iftar menu as a PDF or catalogue. Include family bundle prices. Push the delivery cutoff time. Expected open rate: 96-98%.
Campaign 3 — Daily countdown (during Ramadan)
Goal: keep top-of-mind through the 30 days. Two to three sends per week — not daily — with rotating themes: today's iftar special, family bundle reminder, suhoor menu, delivery cutoff reminder, seating availability. Discipline matters: over-sending causes block rates to spike and Meta quality score to drop.
Campaign 4 — Eid promo (final 5 days)
Goal: capture the Eid family lunch, which is the second-highest revenue day of the calendar after iftar peak nights. Send Eid brunch and Eid family lunch reservations three days before Eid and again on Eid-eve. Expected pre-order rate: 22-28%.

Timing rules — when to send
Send-time discipline is what separates a Ramadan campaign that lifts revenue 45% from one that gets blocked and drops your Meta quality score to Red. The rules:
| Window | Local time | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Best | 3:00pm – 5:00pm | Iftar decision window — bundles, cutoffs, reservations |
| Second best | 10:00pm – 12:00am | Suhoor menu, next-day iftar, Eid brunch pre-orders |
| Avoid | 6:00pm – 8:00pm | Iftar itself — do not interrupt the meal |
| Avoid | 8:00pm – 10:00pm | Taraweeh prayers — respect the observance |
| Never | 5:00am – 12:00pm | Post-suhoor sleep and morning fast hours |
Compliance essentials
Three overlapping rulebooks apply to Ramadan WhatsApp campaigns in the GCC — Meta's WhatsApp Business policy, Saudi PDPL, and the UAE Personal Data Protection Law. All three point in the same direction: opt-in first, opt-out easy, no unsolicited marketing.
- Explicit opt-in required for marketing templates. Every recipient must have documented consent (QR-code scan with tick-box, WhatsApp keyword opt-in, or a signed dine-in form) before any Ramadan promotional template is sent to them.
- Meta template pre-approval. Every template above must be submitted to Meta for approval before Ramadan starts. Approval typically takes 24-72 hours. Rejection reasons include: no opt-out language, promotional tone in a "utility" template, missing variable formatting. Rewrite and resubmit costs another 24-72 hours.
- PDPL and UAE data-protection compliance. Guest data (name, phone, past orders) must be stored on servers with a lawful basis, must support a right-to-erasure request within 30 days, and must not be transferred outside the region without safeguards. Go4WhatsApp and Online eMenu are both designed with regional data-residency options.
- Quality-rating protection. Ramadan is a 30-day window when block rates spike (customers tolerate less spam when family is around, phones are busy). Send fewer, more relevant messages. Two to three sends per week to any given segment is the ceiling.
- Cultural respect in copy. Ramadan Kareem or Ramadan Mubarak greetings, no discount-driven language that reads as trivialising the observance, no imagery inconsistent with modest and family-oriented service. This is common sense — and it directly protects reply rates.
How to run this campaign end-to-end
Five steps, executed in order, starting at least three weeks before Ramadan.
Step 1 — Set up WhatsApp Business API via a BSP
Provision your restaurant's dedicated WhatsApp Business number through a Business Solution Provider. For GCC restaurants we recommend Go4WhatsApp — our sister BSP built for Arabic/English bilingual campaigns, PDPL and UAE data-protection compliance, and direct integration with Online eMenu POS. Meta Business verification takes 48-72 hours.
Step 2 — Get Meta template approval two weeks before Ramadan
Submit all 12 templates (Arabic + English) at least 14 days before Ramadan begins. Approval per template is typically 24-72 hours. Rejections take another 24-72 hours to fix and resubmit, so plan for two rejection-fix cycles per template. For Ramadan 2026 (starting ~18 February), submit all templates by 1 February at the latest.
Step 3 — Import guest list from Online eMenu POS
Segment your Online eMenu POS guest list by past Ramadan behaviour: iftar bookers, family-bundle buyers, suhoor delivery customers, high-AOV regulars, Eid brunch guests. Export each segment with opt-in status attached and load into Go4WhatsApp. Segmentation is the single biggest lever on campaign ROI — treating "everyone" the same underperforms by 3-4×.
Step 4 — Schedule the four-campaign framework
Load the teaser sequence, iftar menu launch, daily/weekly countdown rotation and Eid promo into Go4WhatsApp with strict send-window rules (3-5pm and 10pm-midnight, per the timing rules above). Preview every scheduled send against the send calendar to check no template lands during iftar or Taraweeh.
Step 5 — Monitor and adjust with daily dashboards
Review Go4WhatsApp dashboards every morning: open rate, reply rate, block rate, reservations booked, revenue attributed. Pause any template with block rate above 3% within 48 hours. Rebalance segments and send times based on the first three days of live data — this typically lifts week-two performance by 15-25%.
WhatsApp campaigns delivered · POS-integrated
Go4WhatsApp is our sister BSP for GCC restaurants — bilingual Arabic/English templates, PDPL-compliant, integrated with Online eMenu POS. Ramadan 2026 template packs available. Online eMenu POS from AED 75/month GCC · $9/month international.
See the WhatsApp stackThe tech stack
Three components run a modern Ramadan campaign end-to-end. Every restaurant needs all three or the campaign leaks.
- WhatsApp Business API via a BSP. For GCC restaurants, Go4WhatsApp handles Meta template submission, opt-in management, bilingual message routing, scheduling, and campaign dashboards. Arabic-first customer experience is the differentiator over globally-generic BSPs.
- POS with unified CRM. Online eMenu at AED 75/month GCC (or $9/month international) owns the guest data, past-order history, segmentation, and revenue attribution. Bookings come back through the WhatsApp inbox and into the POS floor plan without manual entry.
- Aggregator sync — Talabat, Deliveroo, Careem, Noon Food. The delivery-heavy pre-iftar window drives orders across all four aggregators; menus, out-of-stock updates and iftar bundle listings need to sync across them. Online eMenu's aggregator sync layer handles Talabat and Deliveroo natively for GCC.
The combined monthly cost of the stack for a single-outlet GCC restaurant is typically AED 250-450/month — Online eMenu POS + Go4WhatsApp + aggregator sync — recovered in the first two nights of Ramadan.
FAQ
When does Ramadan 2026 start and end?
Ramadan 2026 is expected to begin on the evening of 17 February 2026 with the first fast on 18 February, and end on approximately 19-20 March 2026, followed by Eid al-Fitr on 20-21 March. Exact dates depend on official moon sighting by each GCC country's authority.
What is the difference between iftar and suhoor for restaurant timing?
Iftar is the meal that breaks the fast at sunset, typically 6:15-6:45pm across the GCC in Ramadan 2026, driving heavy pre-iftar delivery (5-6pm) and post-iftar dine-in (7-9pm). Suhoor is the pre-dawn meal before the fast begins, driving traffic between roughly 2am and 5am, largely dine-in and late-night delivery.
How much revenue lift can a Ramadan campaign realistically produce?
Well-executed Ramadan campaigns in the GCC typically deliver a 35-50% revenue lift over the 30-day period versus a normal month. Family-focused restaurants and buffet concepts often see higher lifts (up to 70%), while quick-service restaurants see 25-35%. WhatsApp is the highest-leverage channel for that lift.
What is the best time to send WhatsApp campaigns during Ramadan?
The two safe windows are 3-5pm local time (pre-iftar decision window) and 10pm-midnight (post-iftar and suhoor planning window). Avoid sending during iftar itself (6-8pm) and during Taraweeh prayers (roughly 8-10pm), and never send between 5am and noon.
Do WhatsApp messages need to be in Arabic?
Not required, but strongly recommended. In UAE and Saudi Arabia, bilingual Arabic+English templates outperform English-only templates by 30-45% on reply rate. Meta allows you to submit the same template in both languages and route by customer language preference in your CRM.
How early do I need Meta template approval for Ramadan?
Start template submission at least two weeks before Ramadan begins. Meta typically approves within 24-72 hours but rejections happen for tone, promotional intensity, or missing opt-out language, and each rewrite adds 24-72 more hours. For Ramadan 2026 (starting ~18 February) that means all templates should be submitted by 1 February 2026 at the latest.
Which BSP is best for GCC WhatsApp campaigns?
For GCC restaurants running Ramadan campaigns, we recommend Go4WhatsApp — our sister BSP built specifically for Arabic/English bilingual campaigns, PDPL and UAE data-protection compliance, and integration with Online eMenu POS. It handles template submission, opt-in management, scheduling and dashboards in one interface.
How does Online eMenu POS integrate with Ramadan campaigns?
Online eMenu POS at $9/month international (or AED 75/month for GCC) exports segmented guest lists (past Ramadan buyers, iftar bookers, high-AOV families) directly into Go4WhatsApp, syncs bookings and delivery orders back into a unified inbox, and reports campaign-attributed revenue against the daily iftar cover count.
