The phone orders you miss after 7pm, answered.
AI phone ordering answers the calls your staff cannot reach during a rush, takes the order against your live menu, confirms it with the caller, and sends it to the same queue as your WhatsApp and app orders. A person takes over whenever the AI is unsure. We are building it now with pilot restaurants in the US, UK, Europe, India and the GCC.
What is AI phone ordering for restaurants?
AI phone ordering is software that answers a restaurant's phone line with a voice agent, takes the caller's order against the live menu, reads it back for confirmation, and sends it to the POS or kitchen display. It covers the calls staff miss during peaks and after hours, and transfers to a person whenever it is unsure.
Why do restaurants miss phone orders after 7pm?
The phone rings hardest at the exact moment nobody can answer it. Friday and Saturday from 7pm, one person is taking a card payment, another is plating, the delivery apps are pinging, and the line rings out. The caller does not leave a voicemail; they order from whoever answers next. That is the pattern the operator who asked us for this described, and it is the same in a New Jersey pizzeria, a London curry house and a Dubai shawarma counter.
WhatsApp fixes this in India and the GCC because customers already order by chat. In the US and much of Europe the phone is still the ordering channel, so the fix has to live on the phone line itself.
How will the AI take a phone order?
Overflow or after-hours only, by default
Your staff answer as normal. The AI picks up when the line is busy, unanswered after a set number of rings, or outside your service hours. You choose the rules per day and time.
Orders against your live menu
The agent reads from the same menu manager that runs your WhatsApp catalog and QR menu, so sold-out items, sizes and add-ons are current. It reads the order and total back before confirming.
Confirmation by text or WhatsApp
The caller gets an order number and ready time by SMS (US, UK, Europe) or WhatsApp (India, GCC). Payment is taken at pickup, on delivery, or via a payment link in that message.
Lands in the Live Queue and kitchen display
The order appears next to WhatsApp, QR and delivery-app orders in the Online eMenu Live Queue, tagged "phone", with the call transcript attached. See how the kitchen display shows every channel on one screen.
Human handoff on any doubt
Allergy questions, off-menu requests, complaints, or low confidence transfer to your staff. If nobody is free, the AI takes a callback number and the request waits in the queue with the transcript. No guessed orders reach the kitchen.
What can I do about missed calls today?
Start with missed-call recovery, which needs no AI. When a call rings out, the caller automatically receives a message with your ordering link: a WhatsApp catalog link in India and the GCC, or a text with your online menu in the US and Europe. A share of those callers order within minutes instead of calling a competitor. Pilot restaurants switch this on first; the AI voice layer is added on top once it is ready for their market.
If you run WhatsApp ordering already, the Ordering Suite gives you the catalog, cart and Live Queue that phone orders will later flow into. Operators in India can read the QSR and dhaba WhatsApp guide; the wider picture on voice AI economics is in our AI voice ordering costs and ROI guide.
Who is the pilot for?
Single-outlet and small-group restaurants that take a meaningful share of orders by phone and lose calls at peak: pizzerias, takeaways, curry houses, diners, shawarma and grill counters, and any kitchen that closes the phone before it closes the kitchen. You should be willing to give feedback weekly and let us listen to anonymised call recordings to improve the flows. In return you get pilot pricing, direct access to the product team, and flows built around your menu.
AI phone ordering questions.
What is AI phone ordering for restaurants? +
AI phone ordering is a system where an AI voice agent answers your restaurant's phone line, takes the order against your live menu, confirms it with the caller, and sends it to your POS or kitchen screen. It handles the calls your staff can't reach during a rush or after hours, and hands off to a person when it isn't sure.
Is Online eMenu's AI phone ordering available today? +
Not yet as a general release. It is in development and we are onboarding a small number of pilot restaurants in the US, UK, Europe, India and the GCC. Pilot operators get direct access to the product team, shape the call flows, and pay pilot pricing. Apply on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly where the build stands.
Why do restaurants miss so many phone orders after 7pm? +
Because the phone competes with the counter, the pass and the delivery apps at the exact moment all of them peak. One person cannot take a card payment, plate a table and answer a ringing line. Weekend dinner service is when the most calls come in and the fewest hands are free, so calls ring out or go to voicemail, and most callers do not call back.
What happens when the AI is not sure what the caller wants? +
It hands off. The pilot design keeps a human in the loop: if the caller asks something outside the menu, has an allergy question the menu data cannot answer, or the AI's confidence drops, the call transfers to your staff or the AI takes a callback number and the request lands in your order queue with a transcript. No guessed orders reach the kitchen.
Where do phone orders show up? +
In the same Online eMenu Live Queue as WhatsApp, QR and aggregator orders, and on the kitchen display if you use one. The goal is one queue for every channel, so staff never watch a second screen for phone orders.
Which countries and languages will the pilot support? +
The pilot starts in English for the US, UK and Europe, and in English and Hindi for India, with Arabic for the GCC planned next. Telephony is provisioned per country during onboarding. If your market or language is not listed, apply anyway and we will tell you when it is realistic.
What does it cost? +
Pilot pricing is shared during the application call and is not published yet, because call-minute costs differ by country. The rest of the platform is priced openly: the Ordering Suite is ₹199/month in India and $9/month elsewhere, with no annual contract. See the pricing page for the current numbers.
Can I recover missed calls without the AI? +
Yes, and we recommend starting there. A missed-call auto-reply that sends the caller your WhatsApp ordering link (or, in the US, a text with your online menu) recovers a share of lost orders with zero AI risk. Pilot restaurants set this up first; the AI voice layer comes on top of it.
